PRESERVATION

carry what you cannot read

A conforming reader carries what it cannot decode: unknown index fields survive every struct round-trip, unknown segment codecs inspect clean and copy byte-identically, and discard is sanctioned only when reported.

The rule was drilled, not assumed: the ontology drill found COMPILE dropping unknown index fields where COMPACT preserved them — closed the same day with a flattened preservation map and a gate test — and COMPACT's collection of unregistered sidecars was resolved as reported discard, never silent. An older reader degrades, never lies.
