The honest rate: nominal bits plus the shared scales, metadata, and every component preserved at higher precision, divided over all the weights.
NVFP4 is nominally four bits, but sixteen weights share an eight-bit scale — 72 bits per 16 weights, 4.5 effective. Mix in protected BF16 components and the recorded granite map lands at 5.65. A four-bit model is never four bits.
